Mkhonza, a trailblazer from Soweto, has a passion for both technology and events that is deeply rooted in his upbringing. Raised in the vibrant neighbourhood of Mofolo, his journey is one of inspiration and determination. His fascination with technology began at an early age, sparked by his father’s work at Olivetti, where the click-clack of typewriters ignited a lifelong love for innovation and problem-solving.
“My early exposure to technology through my father's work with typewriters and my subsequent experiences in the event space have fueled my passion for creating solutions that truly make a difference,” says Shakes.
Mkhonza pursued Information Technology at the University of Johannesburg, where he graduated with a National Diploma in 1999. His early career began with IBM, where his exposure to tech further solidified his ambitions. Yet, it was his love for music and event hosting that pushed him to explore the events industry more deeply.
In the early 2000s, Mkhonza founded Amuse Africa, an initiative focused on South Africa’s hip-hop music scene. This experience highlighted a gap in the event management space, particularly around ticketing inefficiencies, leading to the development of Amusema.
“My time with Amuse Africa showed me that better event management solutions were essential, which is why I poured my passion and expertise into Amusema,” explains Mkhonza.
